For many of us, the car is a second living room: the daily commute, the school run, long motorway trips. Keeping it clean, fresh and organised makes every journey more pleasant, and regular care also helps protect its value when you come to sell.
Here is a simple routine any driver can follow.
Weekly: quick tidy
- Remove rubbish, bottles and receipts.
- Shake out the floor mats.
- Wipe the dashboard and steering wheel with an interior wipe.
- Check your phone holder and chargers are secure and tidy.
Fortnightly: exterior wash
Road salt, bird droppings and grime can damage paintwork, especially in winter. Use the two-bucket method (one for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt) to avoid dragging grit across the paint. Wash from the top down and dry with a microfibre towel to prevent water spots.
Monthly: shine and protect
Foam cleaners and shine products lift stubborn dirt and leave a glossy finish. A coat of wax or spray sealant every month or two adds a protective layer that makes future washes quicker. Do not forget the wheels and tyres; a tyre shine product makes the whole car look newer.
Keep the interior smelling fresh
- Tackle the source first: vacuum seats and carpets, and clean any spills promptly.
- Choose a car perfume you like: vent clips, hanging fresheners and under-seat options all work well. Lighter scents suit summer; warmer notes feel cosy in winter.
- Air the car out on dry days by opening the windows for a few minutes.
Useful gadgets for everyday driving
- Phone holder: keeps sat-nav at eye level. In the UK it is illegal to hold and use a phone while driving, so a secure mount is essential if you use your phone for directions.
- Car charger: a fast dual-port charger keeps everyone’s devices topped up.
- Organisers: seat-back and boot organisers stop clutter rolling around.
Small checks that keep you running
Once a month, check tyre pressures and tread (the UK legal minimum is 1.6 mm), top up screenwash, and make sure all lights are working. These five-minute checks help you stay safe and avoid problems at MOT time.
