How to Layer Necklaces Like a Stylist (Without Them Tangling)

Layered necklaces are one of the easiest ways to make a simple outfit feel finished. A plain jumper, a white shirt or a summer dress all look more considered with two or three well-chosen pieces at the neckline. The trick is knowing how to combine them so they look intentional rather than cluttered.

Start with length

The secret to layering is spacing. Aim for a gap of around 5 cm (2 inches) between each necklace so every piece can be seen.

  • Choker or collar length (35 to 40 cm): sits high on the neck and anchors the look.
  • Princess length (45 cm): rests on the collarbone, ideal for a small pendant.
  • Matinee length (50 to 60 cm): falls on the upper chest, great for a statement piece.

Three layers in these lengths is a reliable starting formula.

Mix textures, not too many styles

Pair a fine chain with a slightly chunkier one, or a smooth chain with beads. Different textures add depth, but try to keep a common thread, such as the same colour family or the same mood (delicate, boho or bold).

Gold, silver or both?

Mixing metals is now completely acceptable, and two-tone pieces make it easy. If you prefer a classic look, stick to one metal. If you mix, repeat each metal at least twice (for example in a ring or earrings) so it looks deliberate.

Let one pendant lead

If you are wearing a meaningful pendant, a crystal or a family keepsake, make it the longest or most central piece and keep the other chains simple around it.

Match the neckline

  • V-neck: layered pendants that follow the V shape.
  • Crew neck: shorter layers sitting just above the neckline, or a long chain over the top.
  • Off the shoulder or strapless: chokers and collarbone lengths.
  • Shirt collars: a fine chain under an open collar.

How to stop chains tangling

  • Choose chains of different weights; heavier ones tangle less with fine ones.
  • Use a layering clasp or a necklace spacer that keeps each strand separate.
  • Put necklaces on from shortest to longest, and take them off in the reverse order.
  • Store each piece separately, ideally hanging or in individual pouches.

Caring for your jewellery

Put jewellery on after perfume and moisturiser, take it off before swimming or exercising, and wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing. Sterling silver keeps its shine longer when stored in an airtight pouch.
